Free Federal Tax Filing Available, Says Tenney

Assemblywoman encourages constituents to use online tax-filing system before April 18
March 10, 2011
Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney (R,C,I-New Hartford) today announced an opportunity for constituents to file federal taxes for free online. All taxpayers who made less than $58,000 in 2010 are eligible to use the industry’s top tax-preparation software available for free online through the Internal Revenue Service.

“With tax time fast approaching and family budgets tightening across the state, it is helpful to see the IRS teaming up to make filing federal income taxes easier and more accessible,” said Tenney. “The tax code can be cumbersome, but filing for free online helps improve residents’ ability to file their forms correctly before the April 18 deadline.”

The IRS is partnering with the Tax Software Providers to form a Free File Alliance in order to serve up to 100 million Americans. Those interested in this free service may go to to prepare, complete, and e-file federal tax returns.

The Department of Taxation and Finance has a similar, free e-file program available in New York State for those meeting the same criteria as the IRS free filing system. For assistance in preparing your New York State income taxes, constituents should visit or call 518-457-5181. Both state and federal tax filings are due by April 18.
