The month of October is recognized throughout the country as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” and as a nation, we are invited to recall the effects of this devastating illness which can affect our mothers, sisters, and daughters. We also remember those who have fought breast cancer with valiant dignity and are no longer with us. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is meant to strengthen women’s health. Breast cancer is the second-deadliest form of cancer in women. That is why it is important that women receive yearly mammograms and consult with their health care providers to be proactive against the deadly disease.
Every year, nearly 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and over 40,000 will die as a result of the disease. Half of all women diagnosed each year will be over the age of 65. Some of the leading risk factors for breast cancer are family history, a diet high in saturated fats, lack of physical activity and obesity. We should be aware of these risk factors and encourage our loved ones to speak with their health care providers if these factors apply to them.
Early detection is the most effective way to guard against breast cancer. There are new resources, support groups, and hotlines available to help breast cancer victims and survivors.
Some organizations which offer these services are:
New York State Breast Cancer Support and Education Network – www.nysbcsen.org
American Cancer Society – www.cancer.org
Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered – www.facingourrisk.org
Breast Cancer Action
Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline – www.adelphi.edu/nysbreastcancer
Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program – 1-800-877-8077
Breast cancer awareness is something that we must remain mindful of as we look to protect the health of those we love. This October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, please remind the women in your life to get an examination and help educate your loved ones about taking care of themselves and getting the support they need to be cancer free.
