Crouch: October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Lawmaker Reminds New Yorkers That Mammograms Save Lives
September 20, 2013

Assemblyman Clifford W. Crouch (R-Bainbridge) is teaming up with the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program in their annual October breast cancer awareness campaign to inform New Yorkers about the dangers of breast cancer and to encourage women to schedule a mammogram that could potentially save their lives.

“October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to remind women and families of the importance of scheduling a regular mammogram examination,” said Crouch. “The best medicine to fight breast cancer is early detection. Simply taking the time to make an appointment for a mammogram could potentially save your life or the life of someone that you are close to.”

According to Adelphi NY, many women are fearful of a cancer diagnosis. Approximately 95 percent of all mammograms, however, prove to be normal. Hotline callers can also receive emotional support from more than 100 specially-trained volunteers, most of whom are breast cancer survivors themselves.

For more information, and to locate an accredited mammography facility near you, call the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program at 800-877-8077. The hotline has been in existence for 33 years and is a project of the Adelphi University School of Social Work on Long Island. All services are free. You can also find more information by visiting their website at www.adelphi.edu/nysbreastcancer, or their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/adelphibreastcancerhotline.
