Stec Advocates For Disability Funding
Applauds restoration of cuts to developmentally disabled in Assembly, Senate budgets
March 11, 2013
Assemblyman Dan Stec (R,C,I-Queensbury) applauded the action taken today to restore the funding to disability programs that were slated to be cut from the 2013-14 budget. Both the state Senate and Assembly passed measures in their budget proposals restoring a six percent cut to private, non-profit providers of support to people with developmental disabilities contained in the governor’s original budget plan. This cut would have eliminated $120 million, as well as matching funds from the federal government, equating to a loss of $240 million to a sector that impacts 120,000 people.
“In our communities, we always believe in lending a hand to those who need it most, and this proposed budget cut would have taken hundreds of millions away from people who rely on this assistance,” said Stec. “I’m pleased my colleagues in both the Assembly and Senate took action today to ensure that would not happen.
“Non-profit, private providers of services to the developmentally disabled do a fantastic job helping our most vulnerable members of society on enough of a shoestring budget as it is, and the least we can do is ensure they have the funding they need to continue caring for these vulnerable members of our society in the dignified manner they deserve.”
