“All too often, expired and unused prescription medications are left in homes where young children could potentially access them, leading to serious consequences,” Assemblyman David Buchwald (D-Westchester) said. “Proper disposal at one of our local drug take back sites is a great safeguard toward ensuring prescription drugs stay out of the wrong hands and are disposed of in an environmentally safe way.”
The 6th National Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and is sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Assemblyman Buchwald is encouraging individuals and families to take part in the program to safely dispose of any unwanted prescription drugs.
Additionally, Assemblyman Buchwald recently sponsored legislation passed in the Assembly that would create a state drug disposal program to encourage the proper disposal of unwanted prescription medications in order to prevent accidental ingestion or environmental harm (A.5465). A water analysis conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey detected at least one contaminant – such as antibiotics, hormones, detergents, insecticides and disinfectants – in 80 percent of the 139 streams sampled in 30 states, Buchwald noted.
“Preserving the quality of our drinking water and environment is truly a vital part of the health of our communities,” Buchwald said. “Making sure companies and families have access to an effective drug disposal program is a sensible step to help prevent potentially harmful contaminants from getting in our natural water supplies.”
