Assemblyman David Buchwald (D-Westchester) is encouraging students and families to sign this year’s Arrive Alive pledge to help promote a safe, fun and healthy 2013 prom season. The Arrive Alive pledge is an anti-drunk driving initiative that Assemblyman Buchwald is hoping will keep Westchester teens safe as they travel to and from proms.
“Prom night should be about having fun and making memories,” Assemblyman Buchwald said. “Too often, however, teens may feel pressured by their peers to drink during prom night, or worse, drink and drive. This is a decision that can lead to devastation and tragedy. I’m encouraging parents and teens to take part in the Arrive Alive pledge to help ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable evening.”
The Arrive Alive pledge asks parents and families to provide a no-questions-asked ride for their teen at any time during the night, while teens promise not to drive drunk or accept a ride from someone who has been drinking. Every high school in Assemblyman Buchwald’s district has been sent copies of the Arrive Alive pledge to display in their main office or guidance office for families to participate.
Recent statistics have shown that efforts such as the Arrive Alive pledge are increasingly necessary to help keep teens and communities safe. According to the National Highway Safety Administration, teens face the greatest risk of death in an alcohol-related accident of any age group. Unfortunately, 22 percent of drivers ages 15 to 20 who were involved in a fatal motor vehicle crash in 2010 were drinking.
“Creating an honest and open dialogue about drinking and driving can ultimately mean the difference between life and death,” Assemblyman Buchwald said. “And by offering prom-goers non-judgmental alternatives for getting home safely, we can reduce the odds of drinking and driving while increasing the likelihood that teens will make smarter decisions this prom season.”
