Assemblyman David Buchwald (D-Westchester) reminded local governments and non-profits this week to submit their mitigation projects in order to verify if they are eligible for funding made available through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP).
“It’s vital that we rebuild stronger and smarter after the toll Superstorm Sandy took on our communities in Westchester,” Assemblyman Buchwald said. “I’ve been calling around my district to areas that were impacted by the storm, from downtown Harrison to the hamlet of Katonah, reminding local officials of the application deadline and my office’s willingness to help guide individuals through the process.”
The funding will be administered to support local hazard mitigation planning and long-term hazard mitigation measures. Local officials and non-profit organizations are encouraged to develop proposals and innovative measures in the form of a Letter of Intent (LOI), which is available only online at www.nysandyhelp.ny.gov, under the “Hazard Mitigation Grant Program” tab on the website.
“Getting this information to the non-profits and local governments that need the most assistance is very important to our communities, and especially taxpayers,” Buchwald concluded.
Private individuals and businesses may not apply for the HMGP, but eligible applicants can apply on their behalf. Collaborative and creative public-private approaches are encouraged. Homeowners and businesses may be eligible for storm assistance under a variety of other housing recovery programs which can also be found at www.nysandyhelp.ny.gov.
For further assistance on related matters, or guidelines for mitigation proposals, individuals should go to the Sandy Help website or call the Recovery Hotline at 1-855-NYS-SANDY.
