McDonough Unveils Plan That Would Allow DMV To Keep Sex Offender Registry Info On Driving Records

Law enforcement would be able to identify Level 3 sexual predators after “running plates,” driver’s license

Assemblyman David G. McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick) unveiled legislation he is sponsoring, that would place registered Level 3 sex offenders, the most dangerous, on file at the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles. The files would be accessible to police officers “running plates” or a person’s driver’s license.

“This would be a valuable tool for law enforcement,” said McDonough. “The passage of civil commitment this week only protects the community from the release of dangerous sex offenders from prison and their potential to re-offend. If you visit the state Department of Criminal Justice Services web site, you will see that there are thousands of registered sex offenders already living in our communities. This law is just an added protection for our residents and our law enforcement officials.”

Just this week, after 14 years of debate, the state Assembly passed a civil commitment law that will keep the most dangerous sexual predators and pedophiles confined in secure mental health facilities upon the completion of their prison terms.
