McDonough Appalled At Report On MTA Waste

The Empire Center for New York Policy recently released their findings regarding the 2009 payroll of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which showed that for the second consecutive year the MTA paid more than 10 percent of its 74,708 workforce at least $100,000 in total compensation. The report also found that although the number of MTA employees went down by almost 700 during 2009, the average pay for MTA employees actually rose by 2.4%.

“The residents of Long Island and New York state have been forced to deal with the unfair and detrimental practices of the MTA for far too long,” said Assemblyman David G. McDonough (R,C,I – Merrick). “The report released yesterday is just another example of the glowing irresponsible behavior and ineffective management at the MTA. It is obvious that until serious action is taken by our reluctant governor and state legislature to bring the MTA under control, their outrageous and ineffective practices will persist. If this problem continues to be ignored, New York runs the risk of ballooning wages with little control. Real reform is needed at the MTA immediately.”

Noting that the numbers prove how mismanaged the MTA is, McDonough is once again calling on the New York State Comptroller and the City of New York Comptroller to step up efforts to combat waste, fraud and abuse within the agency. A full comprehensive examination of the agency, including a forensic audit, will offer comprehensive results and areas for improvement. Audits increase awareness of what steps can be taken to prevent future abuse and mismanagement.

“This report is just another reason why state leaders need to intervene at the MTA and get to the bottom of their reckless spending habits. I understand and respect the fact that the MTA is an essential method of transportation for many downstate residents, but that does not excuse their continued fiscal mismanagement,” concluded McDonough.
