Assemblyman urges youth to be active and involved in local government

Assemblyman Dave McDonough discusses civic engagement with Mrs. Kerning’s, Mrs. Kahn-Wolk’s and Mrs. Conway’s 6th grade classes at Martin Avenue Elementary.

Assemblyman David G. McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick) recently visited the 6th grade classes of Mrs. Kerning, Mrs. Kahn-Wolk and Mrs. Conway at Martin Avenue Elementary. The assemblyman was there to promote civic engagement and discuss the role local government plays in the lives of young people.

"When we talk about the youth participation in government, all too often the sentence begins with the ‘a lack of’ civic engagement," said McDonough. "I believe it is essential that we promote an interest in government amongst younger generations. Government touches every part of a young person’s life, from educational aid to their safety on the athletic field. Without fostering a sense of civic engagement in our young people, we fail in our efforts to promote American democracy."

"The students quizzed me with a number of insightful and thought-provoking questions. I hope they enjoyed my visit as much as I enjoyed speaking with them," concluded McDonough.
