FEMA Disaster Assistance Deadline Extended

Applications for Federal Disaster Assistance now accepted through January 28

The deadline for residents affected by Hurricane Sandy to register for FEMA assistance has been extended from its previous deadline of December 31, 2012 to January 28, 2013. Residents with private insurance are encouraged to apply, as FEMA benefits may cover costs not picked up by insurance.

“I am pleased to see the federal government has extended the application deadline for aid,” said McDonough. “Many families across Long Island continue to struggle with their day-to-day lives in the aftermath of this destructive storm, and this extension affords affected families and businesses more time to apply for much-needed assistance while they work to restore a sense of normalcy to their lives.”

Residents must register with FEMA to be eligible for federal disaster assistance even if they have contacted the state, their local emergency management agency, the American Red Cross or other charitable organizations. Anyone who has not registered with FEMA for disaster aid, has questions about their application, or needs more information about recovery programs may call FEMA’s toll-free helpline, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or visit www.DisasterAssistance.gov.
