McDonough Supports Volunteer Firefighter Recruitment

Encourages local residents to consider fire service as way to give back to community

Assemblyman Dave McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick) is applauding an on-going statewide initiative called RecruitNY, which allows local fire departments to open their doors to area residents so they can learn what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter in their community. The statewide campaign will take place on Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28.

“Our emergency personnel provide our communities with extraordinary service and personal sacrifice. These dedicated individuals give their time and effort to provide first-class protection and safety for those in need,” said McDonough. “With that said, they can’t do it without our support and there continues to be a shortage of volunteers. I’m proud to stand with the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) to announce the RecruitNY program, and I encourage residents to contact their local department to learn more.”

During the open house period, departments will discuss the requirements to volunteer, conduct demonstrations, answer questions, and let visitors know how to get involved. Interested individuals can contact their local fire department to determine if they are participating in the open house and, if so, when their doors will be open to the public.

As well as highlighting the duties and rewards that come with being a volunteer firefighter, RecruitNY will help raise public awareness about the real need for more volunteers in our state. The hope is that a collaborative effort among volunteer fire departments statewide will turn the declining number of volunteer firefighters around.
