Governor All Bark, No Bite On Common Core

Assemblyman Dave McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick) statement on the 2016 State of the State Address and Executive Budget Proposal

“The governor failed to adequately address Common Core reform during this year’s State of the State Address. He touted his accomplishments, but blamed the State Education Department for failing on his own education initiatives. Let us not forget that it was the Assembly Minority who began this battle to reform Common Core years ago, and the governor is just now beginning to respond to the concerns of New Yorkers. I hope he shows more leadership on Common Core reform and does what is right for our students, teachers and parents.”

“It would be shameful to pass a budget this year without fully restoring the 2010 education cuts – known as the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA). Governor Cuomo plans to only restore 30% this year. Over $400 million is still owed to our schools, and good teachers and programs are being eliminated in Long Island schools because of budgetary constraints. I plan to push for full restoration of the GEA during this year’s budget negotiations.”
