When you hear the term “Revolutionary War Hero” you probably think of George Washington or Paul Revere. General Casmir Pulaski’s name may not be the most recognized, however, he played a critical role during the Revolutionary War. Pulaski’s achievements are documented and celebrated across the country at various times during the year.
General Casmir Pulaski was a member of the Polish nobility and a military commander for the Bar Confederation. He immigrated to America as a soldier of fortune and joined the war efforts to help the colonies fight for their independence. It’s noted that he saved George Washington’s life at the Battle of Brandywine. This event prompted Congress to promote him to the rank of brigadier general.
Pulaski was skilled in battle. He demanded a lot from his men and trained them in tested cavalry tactics.i He also made many reforms to the cavalry system. This earned him the title “Father of American Calvary.” On October 9, 1779, Pulaski was wounded while charging towards the enemy on horseback during the Siege of Savannah. He died several days later.
“General Pulaski Memorial Day” is a national holiday that is observed on October 11th each year. “Casmir Pulaski Day” is celebrated on the first Monday in March in Illinois and Wisconsin. Both states have a large Polish community and close schools to remember General Pulaski. The city of Grand Rapids, Michigan has an annual “Pulaski Days” celebration that takes place in October. New York City holds an annual parade. Kentucky and Indiana also have statewide observances in recognition of General Pulaski.
Locally, we honor the memory of Casmir Pulaski with the Pulaski Day Parade which is held annually in Cheektowaga in mid July. I have had the honor of being the Grand Marshall of this parade many times. This parade is followed by the Polish-American arts festival, which celebrates traditional Polish culture, food, dance, and art.
Each year around this time, The General Pulaski Association has a wreath laying ceremony and installation dinner. Many elected officials and members of the community attend this annual event. This year’s ceremony will take place this Friday, March 8th, at the General Pulaski monument located north of the Ellicott Square Building in downtown Buffalo at 5:00 p.m.
Each year, I look forward to participating in the events that honor General Casmir Pulaski. It’s important that we remember and celebrate this valiant Revolutionary War hero who died fighting for American’s freedom.
