Braunstein Announces His First Bill to Pass the Assembly

Assemblyman Edward C. Braunstein (D-Bayside) announced that the Assembly unanimously passed legislation he introduced which requires that the New York State Office of the Aging (SOFA) assess the programs offered by all senior centers across the state in order to make improvements to the vital services offered to the elderly (A.6733). This legislation also requires that SOFA report on the quality of life of the elderly who attend senior centers as opposed to those who do not, which is important in light of recent attempts to close senior centers in New York City. These reports would be added to the ongoing assessments that SOFA already performs on programs that serve the elderly.

"One of my main focuses since I took office has been to protect the quality of life of the elderly in my district. I am proud that my first bill to pass the Assembly is one that assists senior citizens, especially when 22 senior centers in NYC were outrageously threatened with closure. From hot meals and social interaction, to transportation and case management, many seniors would be left alone and live in isolation were it not for the senior centers in their communities. I will remain vigilant in protecting our most vulnerable citizens," said Assemblyman Braunstein.
