Legislation (A.11566) co-sponsored by Assemblywoman Ellen C. Jaffee (D-Suffern), which streamlines planning and reporting requirements for school districts and boards of cooperative educational services (BOCES), was recently signed into law by Governor Paterson.
The new law authorizes school districts to electronically send reports to the state education department. Important data about the operations of school districts will now be submitted to the State Education Department more efficiently. Another aspect of the legislation allows the state education commissioner to conduct regional transportation studies on the impact of regional transportation systems on local and state costs. The pilot projects will collect data to see if a regional transportation system can be developed in a cost-effective manner to save school districts and the state money through local collaboration.
“State mandates are a burden for school districts. Simplifying the school reporting process will save taxpayers money and let school districts focus more on bringing quality education to students,” said Assemblywoman Jaffee.
