Hundreds of immigrant New Yorkers marched on the State Capitol Tuesday for the annual Immigrant’s Day in Albany.
This comes just weeks before the state’s budget deadline.
It is meant to highlight the issues facing New York’s immigrant community. Several state lawmakers including Assemblyman Ortiz, Assemblyman Meng and Assemblyman Peralta, joined with representatives from immigrant groups to help raise awareness.
New York Immigration Coalition, Executive Director Chung-Wha Hong said, “As the legislature and the governor go into budget discussions in the next few weeks we want to make sure that our voices are heard, because immigrants contribute to making the state’s economy work and be prosperous.”
Some issues included in their legislative agenda are:
- increasing funding for English classes for both adults and children
- ensuring adequate healthcare
- passing legislation to protect the rights of immigrant workers
