Governor Cuomo Fails to Mention DREAM Act in State of the State

Moya: "I am extremely disappointed that today, when the Governor itemized each of his progressive priorities for the year, he chose not to mention the New York State DREAM Act”

Governor Andrew Cuomo delivered his State of the State and budget address today. Although he chose to include funding for the DREAM Act in his budget proposal, mention of this critical piece of legislation was absent from his address today.

"I am extremely disappointed that today, when the Governor itemized each of his progressive priorities for the year, he chose not to mention the New York State DREAM Act,” said Assemblyman Francisco Moya (D-Jackson Heights), the lead sponsor of the DREAM Act. “While he did include it in the executive budget, he failed to lend his voice to the thousands of voiceless young immigrants in New York who are simply asking for an opportunity to pursue the American Dream. He had a chance today to use his public platform to advocate for this critical education issue and he chose not to. It is my hope that during the budget negotiations, the Governor finds the courage to stand up and fight for the DREAM Act, just as he has done for other progressive issues. He has taken on other tough fights in the past and we expect him to do so again when it comes to the futures of our most vulnerable students.”
