Assemblyman Frank Skartados (D-Milton) has opened up his office as a drop-off location for donations to help care for cats displaced by a fire this past Saturday at the Mid-Hudson Animal Aid Essie Dabrusin Cat Sanctuary. Eight out of the 160 cats housed at the free-range, no-kill shelter died in the fire, while the other 152 cats were transported to nearby shelters.
“Thanks to the heroic and quick action of Beacon firefighters and shelter volunteers, over 150 cats were saved from this fire,” Assemblyman Skartados said. “While surrounding shelters have stepped up to the plate to care for these cats, they are running low on supplies. I’ve opened up my office to collect donations to help shelters that are working at full capacity to care for these cats.”
Currently, shelters are in need of wet and dry cat food, blankets, towels, litter and cleaning supplies. To make it easier for residents in Newburgh and Marlborough to donate, Assemblyman Skartados’ office at 154 N. Plank Road, Suite 2 in Newburgh will be open to accept donations for the shelters from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Donations are also being accepted at the following locations:
- Planet New York Tattoo, 11 Marist Drive, Poughkeepsie
- Honorable Ink Tattoo, 215 Main St., Beacon
- 35 Boyce Street, Beacon
- 10 Slocum Road, Beacon
- Playtime Doggie Daycare, 317 Windsor Highway, New Windsor
An avid animal lover and owner of a small farm with sheep and goats in Marlborough, Assemblyman Skartados has remained a strong advocate for animal care. Recently, Assemblyman Skartados sponsored Rosie’s Law, which would allow judges the discretion to allow therapy dogs into the courtroom to comfort children and people with disabilities as they testify (A.7159).
