Thiele: Budget Process In Need Of Reform
March 31, 2007
This budget will be the largest budget in New York State history. Although I am pleased that the budget should increase education aid to Long Island, overall the process went from bad to worse. Neglecting the reforms promised last fall and voted on by the Legislature early this Session, this budget process was secretive and as dysfunctional as I have ever seen in my 12 years here in Albany. Despite the promises of openness and transparency, this is one of the most opaque budget processes in recent history. We were forced to vote on bills that were literally delivered on the 12th hour. This is the epitome of bad government at its worst – and certainly not what the people of this state voted for.
