Thiele Votes Against MTA Bailout
Statement by Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. (R,I,C,WF-Sag Harbor)
May 6, 2009
Today, I voted against the bailout for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) following a secret meeting of negotiations that will result in increased fees and higher taxes. I am opposed to this plan because it implements a 10% fare increase, a payroll tax of 34 cents per $100 of payroll on every employer in the 12-county MTA service area, and adds a $25 fee on motor vehicle registrations. Increased taxation is not the answer and Long Island’s already overtaxed families and small businesses should not have to pay the price for the mismanagement of the MTA.
