Welcome!
For more than two decades, I have had the privilege of serving part of the South Shore of Nassau County as a New York State legislator. I hope this website will give you an idea of who I am, what I stand for and what my staff and I are working hard to accomplish.
It will also help you stay informed about the work I am doing in Albany and at home to strengthen our communities and improve the lives of New Yorkers. I work hard to obtain funding for the institutions at the heart of our communities: our schools, hospitals, libraries, community and recreation centers, as well as programs that serve children, the elderly and those with disabilities. Keeping our communities strong also means focusing protecting the environment and on public safety, such as my efforts to enact gun safety laws, protect children from sex offenders and strengthen DWI penalties. And I am diligent about ensuring that those who protect us – our dedicated fire fighters, law enforcement officers and emergency medical personnel – have the resources they need.
Before becoming a legislator, I spent more than 20 years in the education field, first as a teacher, and later as an administrator. There are few things more important to our future than ensuring that all of our children have access to a high quality education. Every year, as we hammer out a state budget, I am unyielding in my efforts to protect funding to our schools.
I have been an ocean lifeguard for more than 50 years, and I am keenly aware of the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet rays and the rising rates of – often preventable – skin cancer. That is why I have pushed for 15 years to enact legislation requiring sunscreen manufacturers to clearly print an expiration date on their products. Safeguarding New Yorkers’ health was also behind my successful efforts to prevent deaths from sudden cardiac arrests by requiring that automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) be available in schools, health clubs and places where 1,000 or more people gather. More than 50 people have been saved by the quick use of AED’s since this legislation was enacted.
As many of you know, I am a staunch advocate for people with disabilities, I am dedicated to removing barriers, improving access and enhancing the quality of life for those with physical and mental challenges. I believe, with all my heart, that our humanity is measured not by our bank accounts, but by how well we treat our most vulnerable citizens.
For me, the best part of being a New York State legislator is using my office to gather resources for the benefit of individuals and families that need our help, to be able to provide for the most vulnerable and neediest of our society, and to give hope and reassurance that there are people and agencies working to give everybody dignity, respect and a positive quality of life.
