Brennan Calls For Inclusion of Reduced Density Option in Atlantic Yards Environmental Impact Statement
October 18, 2005
Assemblymember Jim Brennan (D-Brooklyn) sent a letter today to Eileen Mildenberger, CEO and Executive Vice President of the Empire State Development Corporation, requesting that the Environmental Impact Statement include options that reduce the projected scale and density of the Atlantic Yards Arena and Redevelopment Project by at least 50%. Brennan cited serious concerns that the staggering size of the project envisions a “virtual new city” on the 22-acre site, with a projected density of 500,000 people per square mile, seven times the density of the population of Manhattan.
Brennan said, “I consider it essential that the Environmental Impact Statement offer real alternatives that reduce the scale and density of the project by at least half. Alternative scenarios to consider include development of the site (1) with deletion of the five office/residential condo towers that surround the arena, and/or (2) a general reduction of the height of buildings throughout the site to effectuate the necessary reduction in density.”
