Assemblyman James Tedisco (R,C,I-Schenectady-Saratoga) is launching his annual Safe Summer Program that rewards children demonstrating safe bike, rollerblading, and skateboarding habits – namely through the wearing of a safety helmet. The program is possible due to the cooperation of the Capital Region SAFE KIDS Coalition, local police departments throughout Schenectady and Saratoga counties, and the generous donations made by Stewart’s Shops, Ben & Jerry’s and Friendly’s Ice Cream.
“Throughout my life, I’ve always enjoyed spending time outdoors during the summer, playing basketball or bicycling,” said Tedisco. “I want kids to remember that even when they’re having fun they should observe good safety practices, like wearing their bike helmet. The simple act of wearing a safety helmet can prevent head injuries and death. So, with the help of area police, we’ll remind kids to wear their helmets while reinforcing their good behavior by providing them with ice cream.”
Local police will distribute “good tickets” that reward children who wear their helmets with a coupon for free ice cream from a participating business sponsor. Tedisco has offered this safety awareness program to children within his Assembly District for over 10 years, and he said he looks forward to its continuation.
