Corwin: All Citizens Deserve Equal Protection
A Statement from Assemblywoman Jane Corwin (R,C,I-Clarence) Regarding Passage of A.6356
May 24, 2013
Since the passage of the NY SAFE Act, I have been working to reform the new law in order to better protect our communities – particularly our most vulnerable citizens, our children. I do not believe the NY SAFE Act does enough to protect schoolchildren or improve public safety, and the bill was laden with technical errors, oversights and mistakes. Nearly five months later, we are still working to fix the most blatant problems in the new law, and although I do support exempting retired police officers, many of whom serve as school safety or resource officers, and federal law enforcement from the gun control provisions of the act, I firmly believe that every law-abiding and legal citizen deserves equal protection under the law. The Second Amendment does not provide rights only to law enforcement – it applies to all. The gun control provisions of the NY SAFE Act should be repealed.
