Assemblywoman Duprey Calls for Reprieve from High Gas Prices
April 30, 2008
Assemblywoman Janet L. Duprey (R,I,C-Peru) joined her colleagues in the Assembly Minority Conference in calling for a summer tax holiday. This tax holiday would consist of freezing the three state gas taxes from Memorial Day until Labor Day. These three taxes are the 8 cents motor fuel tax, the 8 cents sales tax and the 16 cents Petroleum Business Tax. On average, this would equate to a savings of 30 cents per gallon of gasoline and 35 cents per gallon on diesel fuel purchased. “I am supporting this measure because the citizens of New York need to receive a break from being overtaxed by this state,” stated Duprey. “New Yorkers are feeling squeezed because everywhere they turn the government is taxing them or prices are rising,” continued Duprey. This summer tax break, coupled with a federal proposal to eliminate taxes on gasoline for the summer, could equal almost 50 cents per gallon in savings. “The summer tax holiday has the support of the Assembly Minority as well as the Senate Majority, so I am calling on the rest of the New York State Legislature to do what is right for their constituents and to pass this vital legislation,” concluded Duprey.
