The State Commission on Property Tax Relief issued its final report to the governor. Chairman Suozzi and Commission members have compiled an extensive and seemingly well thought out report that may finally provide the property tax relief sought by taxpayers.
An initial review of the report indicates the major recommendations made by the Commission are a cap on school property tax levies, a STAR circuit breaker, reduction of state mandates and consolidation of some services to decrease cost for school districts. As families in the North Country struggle with the current economic climate, the state Legislature must work with the governor to reduce the burden of property taxes, particularly school taxes. The time has come for those of us in Albany to stop talking about the problem and take the necessary action to get the job done. I will work with my colleagues to accomplish property tax relief during the upcoming 2009 legislative session.
