Duprey: Tax Cap Works For North Country, More Work Ahead For Unfunded Mandates

Legislative Statement by Assemblywoman Janet L. Duprey (R,I-Peru)
June 24, 2011
New York taxpayers suffer from the highest property taxes in the nation. Tonightís passage of a property tax cap signals Albany is finally listening to taxpayers and small businesses, and appears to be serious about putting New York on a road to economic prosperity. However, a great deal of work remains to bring more relief to our local schools and municipalities.

This was a difficult vote to cast on behalf of my constituents. While the property tax cap will finally bring relief to overburdened taxpayers and small businesses, there was only modest unfunded mandate relief for our local schools and municipalities. Itís critically important that lawmakers ensure unfunded mandate relief to them so North Country residents still can be provided with the services and programs that are important to us without suffering from additional tax increases.

Governor Cuomo has assured us that more mandate relief will be forthcoming. I look forward to working with the Governor and all of my colleagues to pass meaningful unfunded mandate relief.
