Assemblyman John Ceretto (R,I – Lewiston) today issued a protest “no” vote against the selection of new state Board of Regents members. The Niagara County assemblyman blasted the process by which the board members are selected and called today’s vote a rubber stamp for Albany special interests.
“I’m extremely disappointed with the nominating process for the Board of Regents,” said Ceretto. “Board members are making vital decisions about the state’s education system, yet rank-and-file lawmakers have zero say in the nominating process. This sham vote not only disenfranchises my constituents but reduces the state’s ability to pass much-needed educational reforms. ”
The Regents Board is comprised of 17 members elected by the State Legislature for five- year terms. There is one representative from each of the state's 13 judicial districts and four members who serve at-large. Due to the composition of the legislature, the Assembly Majority controls the process.
“This process needs to be changed so that elected officials in both houses have the right to be a part of the process, regardless of their party affiliation,” said Ceretto. “In 2015, the Regents seat for Western New York will be up and I want to have real input in deciding who will represent our schools and help shape the future of our state’s public education.”
