Ceretto To Meet With Governor Cuomo

Lawmaker urges state’s chief executive to appoint Niagara County representative to NYPA Board of Trustees

Assemblyman John Ceretto (R,I-Lewiston) today announced that he will meet with Governor Andrew Cuomo to discuss the appointment of a Niagara County resident to the New York Power Authority’s (NYPA) Board of Trustees in order to fill one of its vacancies. The meeting was scheduled after Assemblyman Ceretto personally reached out to Governor Cuomo earlier this year to express his concerns about the board’s exclusion of local representatives.

“I am pleased that the Governor has decided to meet with me to discuss the possibility of appointing a Niagara County resident to NYPA’s Board of Trustees,” said Ceretto. “Such an appointment would be a victory for Western New Yorkers who want more control over the creation and utilization of their hydroelectric power.”

The New York Power Authority is the largest state-owned energy agency in the country. Located in White Plains, Westchester County, it consists of energy brokers selling power to government agencies, community-owned electricity systems, rural electricity cooperatives, companies and neighboring states. The Niagara Falls Power Project hydroelectric plants have a larger combined power-producing capacity than the next four largest utilities in the state.

“A Niagara County board member would be an asset to our region and would ensure that the power produced at the largest electricity-producing plant in the state is used to lower power costs in Western New York,” said Ceretto. “This is a win-win for local business and families now paying some of the highest energy rates in the nation, and I encourage Governor Cuomo to consider appointing a Niagara County representative to the NYPA board.”
