Assemblyman John Ceretto (R,I-Lewiston) today helped pass legislation that will encourage tourism and help create local jobs in the Niagara Falls region. The bill establishes the temporary New York State War of 1812 200th Anniversary Commemoration Commission. The Commission will plan and execute a number of War of 1812 reenactments and other tourism events.
“The Great Lakes region was an important front in the War of 1812, with battles raging from Lake Erie to Fort Niagara all the way up to Plattsburgh,” Assemblyman John Ceretto said. “These conflicts played a key role in the fight to maintain our independence from Great Britain, and becoming a nation unique in the annals of world history.”
The commission will develop and coordinate a series of multi-year reenactments and other tourism events that highlight eight locations where significant events occurred during the War of 1812; these include the Seaway Trail, Fort Niagara, the Battle of Ogdensburg, the Battle of Plattsburgh, Fort Ontario, Fort Wadsworth and Sackets Harbor.
“These events will bring tourists and War of 1812 reenactors from across the globe to our region, causing a substantial influx of tourist dollars,” Ceretto said. “These monies will increase the speed of our economic recovery and bring much-needed part-time and full-time employment opportunities to the Niagara Falls region.”
