Assemblyman John Ceretto (R,I-Lewiston) today released the following statement regarding the conclusion of this year’s legislative session and his vote to cap property tax increases at 2 percent:
“From passing an on-time state budget that closed New York’s $10 billion deficit without raising taxes to approving pro-jobs legislation such as Power NY, this year’s legislative session contained a number of notable accomplishments.
“I am pleased that in my first year in the Assembly I could help effect so much change in Albany and keep my promise to the people of Western New York by passing a strong property tax cap. While the tax cap legislation did contain some overdue mandate relief, lawmakers must continue to work on eliminating unfunded state mandates in order to lower taxes across our region. I will be leading the charge in this new fight.
“I also am pleased that the Legislature was able to pass the new SUNY 2020 rational tuition policy this year. This higher education legislation will provide students and parents with the increased security of paying for predictable and fair school costs, while allowing our universities to make greater investments in their students and the surrounding community.
“Moving forward, the Legislature also must redouble its efforts at making New York State a more attractive place to conduct business in order to create jobs and help put its citizens back to work. By making government a partner, instead of an inhibiter, to job creation we can build a strong foundation for future economic growth as well as a diverse and robust economy.”
