Assemblyman John D. Ceretto (R,I – Lewiston) today released the following statement in observation of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day:
“The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was an inspiring leader who helped to reshape our nation’s political, economic and cultural landscape, and I would encourage all Americans to honor his memory on this important day,” said Ceretto. “His work in the civil rights movement was truly inspirational, not only to myself, but to millions of people around the world. Dr. King’s legacy in the advancement of racial equality must continue to be built upon by the state Legislature to ensure an enhanced quality of life for all New Yorkers.”
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was formally signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on November 2, 1983. It was officially observed for the first time on January 20, 1986, and falls annually on the third Monday in January.
