Assemblyman John Ceretto (R,I-Lewiston) today announced that Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed Assembly bill 10227-A, Ceretto-sponsored public safety legislation that reduces costs on local taxpayers, into law. The measure will allow injured Niagara Falls firefighter Richard E. Mylchreest to retire. Mylchreest was hurt in the line of duty and has been receiving disability assistance as a result.
Ceretto noted that the law will help enhance public safety while reducing costs on Niagara Falls taxpayers. Firefighter Mylchreest’s absence required his colleagues to work additional overtime hours, and his disability status prevented Niagara Falls from hiring a new, full-time firefighter. This increased local costs while leaving the Niagara Falls Fire Department understaffed.
“I am proud to have sponsored this important piece of legislation,” said Ceretto. “Now, one brave firefighter may retire with dignity, and a new firefighter can be hired to help save lives and protect our community. The retirement of Richard Mylchreest is fair compensation for his dedication and public service.”
