Assemblyman Joe Borelli (R,C,I-Staten Island) will be introducing legislation to amend the controversial gun control law, the NY SAFE Act, which was rushed through the legislative process and signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo last week. Borelli was the only New York City state representative to vote against the hastily-crafted bill.
To help improve the law and make an important exception for law enforcement officials, Borelli has introduced legislation to exempt both active duty and retired law enforcement from the law’s reduced magazine requirements.
“Retired law enforcement play an important role in our community’s safety and have made a positive impact on numerous occasions by stepping in to avert tragedies before the police could arrive on the scene,” said Borelli. “Their training and experience make them a valuable asset to the safety of our neighborhoods, and it is foolish to limit their capability to respond to any circumstance.”
PBA president Patrick J. Lynch said, “There have been countless incidents where retired police officers who were legally armed have intervened in violent crimes and saved lives. These men and women represent a very valuable hidden asset to New York City’s safety. Criminals will still carry weapons with high capacity magazines and it makes no sense to put fully trained and highly experienced former police officers at a tactical disadvantage by limiting their firepower. For that reason, the NYC PBA wholeheartedly supports the bill sponsored by Assemblyman Joseph Borelli to exempt active and retired police officers from the restrictions of the 2013 SAFE Act.”
The bill will be co-sponsored by Assemblywoman Malliotakis and Assemblymen Cusick and Titone.
