Assemblyman Joseph Borelli (R,C,I-South Shore) announced he is pleased to hear that Thomas Prendergast has been appointed the new Chairman and CEO of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Prendergast has been serving as the head of the MTA’s New York City Transit division, which operates the MTA buses, subways, and trains in the five boroughs. Before that, he headed the Staten Island Rail Road (SIRR).
“This appointment has been a long time in coming,” said Assemblyman Borelli. “He was an excellent President of the Staten Island Rail Road, and during his time as a South Shore resident, he came to understand the transit problems that face Staten Island commuters every day.”
The US Department of Transportation continues to rate the commute of South Shore residents as one of the worst in the nation. Staten Island’s mass transit users depend on the SIRR and the MTA’s express buses to get them to their jobs in Manhattan.
“As President of NYC Transit, Tom made sure that local bus service cuts were eventually restored, and express bus service was enhanced,” continued Borelli. “Our commuters rely on our buses to get to and from work, and Tom always understood how critical that need really is. I have complete confidence that he will do an excellent job as the new chief of the MTA. He will do right by the people in my district and our borough at-large.”
Assemblyman Joe Borelli is a member of the Assembly Committee on Transportation and the MTA’s Capital Program Review Board.
