Assemblyman Joseph Borelli (R,C,I-South Shore) today condemns the “Women’s Equality Agenda” being put forward by the Governor. The proposal seeks to tie controversial changes to the state’s abortion laws with legislation seeking to address issues like domestic violence, pay equity, and human trafficking.
“The public will see right through this bill as nothing more than a bully tactic aimed solely at using domestic violence and pay equality as political football,” said Assemblyman Borelli. “If the goal is truly to address those issues, then the Governor and the Legislature would compromise and consider the parts separately, as it does with thousands of other bills each year. I imagine most legislators all agree on 58 of the 59 pages of the proposal.
Some of the proposals have their own legislation already pending. It is thought that they could secure passage independently.
“Instead of moving forward with good provisions of the law, the Governor said in his own words that this bill is just a litmus test for abortion. That should be insulting to the millions of New York state residents who want real action on domestic violence, sex trafficking, and pay equality. Mark my words, this is all a political plan to make some headlines now and then use the “Senator ‘so & so’ is anti-women” advertisements in the next election cycle. Thankfully, the women and men of my district aren’t that shortsighted.”
Assemblyman Borelli represents the 62nd District based on the South Shore of Staten Island.
