Assemblyman Joseph Borelli (R,C,I-South Shore) today slammed Rolling Stone magazine for featuring Boston bomber, Dzhohkar Tsarnaev, on the cover of their most recent issue. Tsarnaev and his brother, Tamerlan, planned and executed a bombing of the Boston Marathon this year, which resulted in three deaths and 264 injuries. The cover photo is self-taken and was posted via Twitter by Tsarnaev.
“I have tremendous respect for the First Amendment; they can print whatever they want,” said Assemblyman Borelli. “But I’m going to use my First Amendment right to remind my constituents what a piece of garbage this magazine has become. Just about every Staten Islander knows someone who was killed by terrorism and to glorify him like some teen idol is disgusting.”
“They must think the American people are fools. They knew this would cause people once again to talk about a magazine that hasn’t been edgy since the ‘60s,” continued Borelli. “I think the public will have a hard time digesting the fact that this magazine was willing to glorify terrorism simply to bolster their slumping sales.”
The magazine is beset on all sides by critics of the self-portrait, which gave it the same treatment as a cover featuring a movie star or model. CVS ordered a recall of all copies of this issue of Rolling Stone from their stores.
“I applaud CVS for pulling this issue from their stores, and I call upon every Staten Island business that sells this magazine to do the same,” added Borelli.
Joe Borelli represents the South Shore-based 62nd District in the Assembly.
