Giglio Announces New Civil Service Correction Officer Exam

Assemblyman Joe Giglio (R, I, C-Gowanda) today announced that the Department of Civil Service will be holding a Correction Officer Trainee exam on October 18, 2008.

“Western New York is home to many of the state’s correctional facilities,” said Giglio. “These positions give individuals a chance to help maintain an important part of New York’s criminal justice system. I encourage anyone looking for a new and challenging career to take advantage of this opportunity.”

The starting salary for a correction officer trainee is $34,329 per year and increases to $36,111 after six months of employment. Following the successful completion of a one-year traineeship, the salary increases to $41,348.

In order to qualify for the exam, all candidates must be U.S. citizens, at least 21 years of age, a New York state resident, and have either their high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Applicants must also be in good physical and mental health to take the comprehensive written exam. Candidates will be given a background, medical, physical, and psychological check prior to being appointed to the training academy.

All completed applications must include a $30 check payable to the NYS Department of Civil Service and must be postmarked by September 2, 2008.
