Giglio Votes To Pass Sex Offender E-Mail Alert Law

The Assembly passes legislation that will notify parents of local Level 2 and 3 sex offenders

Assemblyman Joe Giglio (R,I,C-Gowanda) voted for legislation Wednesday evening that will allow New Yorkers to sign-up to receive e-mail alerts when a Level 2 or 3 sex offender moves into their community. The alerts are free of charge to any resident who chooses to sign-up with the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).

“As a former member of law enforcement, I believe that the safety of our community is of the utmost importance. The purpose of this legislation is to keep parents better informed when a high risk sex offender is in their community,” stated Giglio. “While a subdirectory of Level 2 and 3 sex offenders is always available online, this legislation will provide e-mail alerts that will be sent out whenever the subdirectory is updated or a new entry is made in the subdirectory, keeping concerned parents up to date regarding sex offenders in their neighborhoods.”

This legislation also was passed unanimously by the Senate in May and now awaits Governor Paterson’s signature.
