Repealing the SAFE Act: A Reasonable Approach

A statement from Assemblyman Joe Giglio (R,C,I- Gowanda)

“Today, members of both houses of the legislature gathered together to announce Assembly Bill 6140, which would limit the SAFE Act across the state outside of the City of New York.

“As a proud co-sponsor, I am very happy that our conference was joined by many members of the Senate to introduce this legislation to the public. While those downstate have praised the SAFE Act’s effectiveness, the statistics show that in upstate and western New York, all that the SAFE Act does is put restrictions on responsible, law-abiding gun owners. Our bill would change the language of the SAFE Act to continue within New York City, but not apply to other parts of the state.

“There is already precedent with various other bills that separate New York City’s laws with those in upstate and western New York, and we feel that the SAFE Act can be another piece of legislation to undergo this treatment.

“This is about coming together and realizing that our state has two different approaches to gun ownership between our geographical areas. I feel that this is common ground where both houses, both sides of the aisle, the governor’s office, and the citizens of New York can all come out as winners.”
