Assemblyman Joseph S. Saladino is encouraging residents to utilize the Internal Revenue Service’s Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The EITC is a refundable credit for employed individuals or couples who qualify for the income criteria. The IRS has designated Friday, January 28, 2011 as EITC Awareness Day as a means of increasing public awareness of this financially helpful program.
“I encourage anyone who is eligible to take advantage of this opportunity,” said Assemblyman Saladino. “This program is especially important as overburdened taxpayers struggle to meet their expenses. I fully understand the hardship that Long Islanders must shoulder and hope that taxpayers get every break they deserve.”
The EITC is a refundable credit for people who work. It helps eligible taxpayers lower their taxes or receive larger refunds. New York State and New York City also have local versions of EITC. However, in spite of extensive awareness campaigns by the IRS and its partners, millions of eligible taxpayers still have not utilized this program.
Assemblyman Saladino noted that the IRS is offering free tax preparation sites that assist taxpayers in claiming the tax credit. For more information on eligibility and free tax sites for assistance, please visit http://www.eitc.irs.gov/central/main/.
