Assemblyman Karim Camara Applauds Governor Paterson’s Effort to Establish Term Limits for State Elected Officials
January 7, 2010

Brooklyn – Assemblyman Karim Camara (D-Brooklyn) applauds the governor in his call for establishing term limits for New York State elected officials and says that the timing could not better. Even though Camara introduced Bill A.04145 calling for constitutional change to the term limits almost three years ago.

“We are facing a crisis in confidence when it comes to how citizens view their government. There is no better way to demonstrate to them that we are here to serve and not for our own personal aggrandizement than instituting limits on our terms”.

Dismissing critics who assert that term limits have led to instability in the New York City Council he says twelve years should be enough. “The New York City council terms of eight years were recently increased to a maximum of twelve. This proposal to reform state government calls for twelve years. Twelve years should be sufficient to achieve significant accomplishments on behalf of those we represent but it will also encourage the best tendencies of a citizen legislature with a ‘fresh’ perspective.”

Camara introduced A.04145 close to three years ago that would limit the amount of consecutive years that members of the legislature and state-wide elected officials could serve to twelve. The legislation, which is sponsored in the Senate by Senator Eric Adams, also extends the terms of the legislature to four years instead of two.

In a TV interview with 2 on Your Side May 6, 2009, Assemblyman Camara said, “The people want term limits and it should happen.” He found the 2 on Your Side poll numbers showing that 8 out of 10 people want change. “This is not just people who are cynically saying throw the bums out. They are looking at it from an intellectual perspective; they see what’s going on in Albany and the federal government.”

About Assemblyman Camara

He serves a diverse constituency of over 135,000 in the 43rd Assembly District in Brooklyn, New York and represents them as a legislator in Albany and a leader in the community. He has organized a community coalition that works on issues of violence and social disorder. In addition, he formed a coalition of pastors committed to solving the problems of the community and believes in a collective approach to solving the community’s most pervasive problems.

Assemblyman Camara has also introduced a myriad of progressive legislation during his short time in the Assembly. Some of these bills include universal sick leave for all New York State employees and the moratorium on all evictions of tenants when the landlord is in foreclosure. In these trying economic times, Assemblyman Camara has even introduced legislation that would grant a stay of child support to non-custodial parents who have lost their jobs. These bills, Assemblyman Camara believes, would go a long way to benefit some of the disadvantaged in our State.
