Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski Secures Grant for the Purchase of a New Van for the Haverstraw Center

The State funding was awarded to the Village of Haverstraw who used the grant to benefit the children of the Haverstraw Center

Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski recently stood with Village of Haverstraw Mayor Mike Kohut, Department of Youth & Family Services Director Marion Breland, Assistant Director Peter Fata, Deputy Mayor Emily Dominguez, and children and staff of the Haverstraw Center summer camp to unveil their new van. Assemblyman Zebrowski was able to secure state funding for the Village so that the Department of Youth & Family Services could replace the Center’s outdated vehicle. With this recent purchase, the Center is able to easily transport campers to different locations and events throughout the County. Staff can also pick up food for the children and other necessary errands.

“I was happy to be able to secure this grant for the Haverstraw Center. The wonderful work that they do for the families and children in the North Rockland area is invaluable. They are located right in the heart of the Village and have become the “go-to” resource for residents in the community. They embody all the positive and collaborative aspects of community and government and I look forward to continuing to support the great work that they do,” said Assemblyman Zebrowski.

The Village of Haverstraw Department of Youth and Family Services is a combination of the Departments of Recreation and Municipal Counseling Services that was established in 2006. For decades the Village has operated a summer camp and in the 1990’s opened a community center downtown. In 2006-7 the community center building was renovated and the Haverstraw Center officially opened and began operations. Programs are offered through the Center by the Department as well as other community agencies and individuals. The Center has a gymnasium, computer lab with 12 computers, art and game rooms, two kitchens, large multipurpose and conference rooms as well as counseling offices.

"This van will provide access to a world of interests and opportunities for the Village of Haverstraw's young people and their families. From cultural events, to sporting events, to college fairs and other activities, the Haverstraw Center will be able to enrich the experiences of our Village residents through the use of this van. Many thanks to Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski, who is there for our community in this and so many other ways," said Marion Breland, Department of Youth & Family Services Director and Mayor Mike Kohut.

“These are the types of investments that make a real difference to communities especially when children are the benefactors. The van will help connect Haverstraw youth with the various activities that the Village provides through their excellent programming,” concluded Assemblyman Zebrowski.
