Today, after being sworn in as the 55th Executive of New York State, Governor David Paterson stood before the people of New York and demonstrated that he is ready to lead us forward. In reflecting on the turbulent times ahead, Governor Paterson rightly urged us to set aside the differences that sometimes paralyze progress and work together towards the common goals for restoring trust in our government and furthering the interests of the people.
The new Governor exhibited a clear understanding of the challenges that lay before us, the most immediate being the enactment of a balanced state budget that will stand up in the face of a continued economic downturn. When addressing major issues like unaffordable property taxes, access to affordable and quality health care, education, affordable housing and the economy the Governor spoke of the need to collaborate as equal partners to develop sound policies to meet the needs of our communities. In striking this inclusive tone, Governor Paterson has begun to create an atmosphere that will allow us to continue to make the changes the voters demanded nearly a year and a half ago. I look forward to working with him to meet these goals.
