Assemblymember Kevin Cahill (D – Ulster, Dutchess) would like to remind constituents that the New York State Department of Taxation & Finance application deadline for homeowners eligible for the 2008 Middle Class STAR program is midnight, December 31st, 2008.
Most homeowners should have received their STAR rebate check automatically this year; yet, others may have needed to re-apply for the rebate due to changes in their property assessment or because they were eligible in 2007 but had not submitted an application. The New York State Department of Taxation & Finance cites that they mailed out over 486,000 applications to homeowners to apply for benefits, but to date have only received approximately 238,000 in response.
“New York State is facing the worst economic challenge since the Great Depression and homeowners are feeling the burden of this with property and school taxes spiraling out of control in the Hudson Valley,” stated Assemblyman Cahill. “I hear from constituents that this is a beneficial program and I encourage residents to take advantage of this opportunity and apply for the tax relief to which they are entitled,” concluded Mr. Cahill.
Homeowners are encouraged to utilize the New York State Department of Taxation & Finance web site at www.tax.state.ny.us for program information and to fill out applications, or contact the NYSDTF by phone on the dedicated STAR rebate hotline at 1-866-358-2511. All applications must be received via the internet or postmarked by December 31st, 2008.
