The New York State Assembly Intern Committee is currently accepting applications to fill two session intern positions for the 2010 legislative season. Full time undergraduate and graduate students will be selected to apprentice in the Assembly Chamber, working side by side with Members of the Assembly and governmental staff.
“The Assembly Session Intern Program is a dynamic learning opportunity for students to experience the legislative process first hand, preparing those selected for careers in public service or policy advocacy,” said Assemblymember Cahill. “My experience with the program has been extremely positive and I look forward to working with the talented individuals selected for the 2010 session.”
The Assembly Session program is the only legislative internship in Albany with a structured academic requirement. No other internship has independent faculty-in-residence teaching its classroom component. It is the only internship that submits to an independent evaluation process conducted by the State Board of Regents’ National Program on Noncollegiate Sponsored Instruction.
“As the public sector continues to grow there will be a need for talented, creative and dedicated individuals to fulfill the needs of the people,” Mr. Cahill noted. “Students from all majors will be considered for this internship program, highlighting the diversity that a career in policy provides.”
The Session Internship offers a stipend of $4,140 for the Spring 2010 semester, which includes a book allowance for undergraduate students. Graduate students are eligible to receive an $11,500 stipend. Students selected will receive a full semester of academic credit and will have professors in residence from the State University of New York at Albany and New York University. Undergraduate applicants must be juniors and seniors matriculated in a college degree program. Upper level matriculated students in an associates degree program are also encouraged to apply. Graduate applicants must be matriculated in or have recently completed a graduate degree program. International students should have academic requirements in the United States to be eligible.
Please note that interested undergraduate students must apply to their colleges according to the deadline established by their institution. All applications must be postmarked by October 30, 2009, although extensions are usually granted if requested by a campus representative. Graduate Scholar candidates must apply directly to the Intern Committee by October 30, 2009.
