Assemblymember Kevin Cahill (D-Ulster/Dutchess) announced today that he has secured a $5,000 grant for the Resource Center for Accessible Living (RCAL). The funding will be used to reconstruct the entranceway to their facility in Kingston, making it more accessible to the public.
“The services provided by the Resource Center fill an important gap in our community,” said Assemblymember Cahill. “By funding this project, we are ensuring that the organization will keep their limited resources dedicated to providing the quality of life assistance that is at the core of their mission.”
Since 1983, RCAL has been dedicated to assisting and empowering individuals to live independently and participate in all aspects of community life and has a long tradition of consumer controlled and directed service delivery. This Independent Living Center subscribes to the basic philosophy that people with disabilities can and should make their own choices and take control of the issues that affect their daily lives, such as education, employment, housing and health care.
As the former Chair of the Assembly's Task force on People with Disabilities, Assemblymember Cahill has proven to be a committed advocate on these issues. Previous grants secured by the Assemblymember have assisted with renovations, updated technology, provided support for independent living centers and assistance in securing the RCAL office building.
Resource Center for Accessible Living Executive Director Sue Hoger said, “I am deeply grateful for Assemblymember Cahill’s consistent support over the years.”
“During these tough economic times, it is important to recognize and support the work of organizations like RCAL that are on the ground helping people everyday,” noted Mr. Cahill. “I am proud to continue to advocate for funding and programs that further the efforts of worthy recipients such as these.”
