Cahill Statement on Governor Paterson’s Deficit Reduction Address
November 9, 2009
Today Governor Paterson delivered a clear and sober assessment of the fiscal reality New York is facing in the aftermath of what has been the sharpest decline since the 1930s. We are in the midst of an economic crisis and we must act promptly on a responsible deficit reduction plan before the State begins to run out of money.
We must remain vigilant in addressing the continuing economic downturn. Acting now will keep New York ahead of all the other states, some of which have already resorted to drastic and destabilizing measures like eliminating pre-kindergarten, furloughing workers, closing libraries and issuing IOUs. We need to work with the Executive to pass a plan that will keep our finances on track without shifting any more of the burden onto the taxpayers who have suffered enough during these tough times.
