Assemblyman Cahill Supports Reproductive Health Efforts by Planned Parenthood of the Mid-Hudson Valley
January 11, 2010

Albany – Assemblymember Kevin A. Cahill (D- Ulster, Dutchess) met with representatives from Planned Parenthood of the Mid Hudson Valley today as part of Family Planning Advocates’ Day of Action. Those who spoke on behalf of Planned Parenthood stressed the need for family planning funding and comprehensive sex education.

“Throughout my career, I have been an advocate for increased access to safe and affordable health care, particularly when it comes to women’s reproductive health,” said Assemblymember Cahill. “Planned Parenthood of the Mid-Hudson Valley has shown an unrivaled commitment to providing women in our community with the programs and services they need.”

Representatives highlighted the importance of educating teenagers on preventative methods of birth control and safe sex. The programs offered by peer counselors at Planned Parenthood of the Mid Hudson Valley positively influence teenagers to make informed decisions about their bodies without putting their health or the health of others at risk.

Two key pieces of legislation, both sponsored by Assemblymember Cahill, would help Planned Parenthood in its goals. The Healthy Teens Act would establish a grant program for comprehensive and age appropriate sex education through the department of Health, and the Unintended Pregnancy Prevention Act would help to increase the availability of emergency contraception.

“Reproductive health is an issue that affects all members of a community, not just women,” said Assemblymember Cahill. “I am proud to support the efforts of Planned Parenthood as they work to promote and protect health care and reproductive rights, and continue to improve the lives of women in our state.”
